I am a healer, a hardworking woman and THE symbol of the compound. I serve as a mediator between the spirits and the living. I perform rituals to consult and seek favours from the gods in the shrine. I represent the compound at functions, meetings and also work as a market trader.
I cannot speak Portuguese but when the gods/spirits take over me, I easily perform the rituals in Portuguese. This is because my great-great-grandfathers came to Ghana with the gods they worshiped in Brazil. Portuguese remains an important aspect of my past and story. Not speaking it fluently feels like a part of my story and identity has been erased.
I dream of going to Brazil one day. I believe that Lula, the former Brazilian president will fulfil his promise of arranging a visit.
Miss Hammond, Approx 85 years old, Stallholder
I have a small "Chop Chop" stall where I make fufu and sell in front of the compound. I used to tell my sons and daughters about our past and I have taken it upon myself to educate my grandchildren in order to carry the legacy.
I see the Ga language as a symbol of survival and hope. When my great grand parents came to Ghana to start a new life they had to learn Ga in order to fit within the society. I would describe myself as a very proud person. I would also say I am old and just now looking forward to passing away peacufully.

I am extremely proud of my people’s past. When I have children I will tell them about the Tabom's incredible journey. I only wish we spoke Portuguese as it is part of our story.
I feel we are lost in translation within the Ghanaian community. To me Ga* is a tool for communication. I am not Ga, I am Tabom.
*Ga is a spoken language and ethnic group in Ghana
I am caring, creative and beautiful.
Juliana White, 45 years old, Market trader
I am very proud to be a Tabom. Why? Because during the slave trade, although many slaves were sold and never came back, my great-great-grandfathers were able to find freedom and venture back to Africa to start a new life.
I have five children and I remind them of our past. I am hardworking, extremely resourceful and beautiful (laugh).
